A car and knife attack at Ohio State University (OSU) which left 11 people injured on Monday “bears all the hallmarks of a terror attack,” said US Representative Adam Schiff, top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, on Monday evening.

Schiff said the suspect, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, “may have been self-radicalized.”

Artan, an OSU student, drove his car into a group of pedestrians on the university campus on Monday morning around 10:00 AM before emerging and stabbing victims with a butcher knife, wounding a total of 11 people. He was shot and killed by a police officer within minutes.

Artan was an 18-year-old Muslim immigrant from Somalia with lawful permanent resident status. Investigations of his social media accounts after the attack found an angry Facebook post in which Artan told America “to stop interfering with other countries, especially the Muslim [people],” and vowed, “By Allah, we will not let you sleep unless you give peace to the Muslims.”

In an interview with the OSU student newspaper in August, Artan had said that he was “scared” to pray out in the open because of negative portrayals of Muslims in the media.

Artan’s method of attack is unmistakably similar to a number of assaults by Arabs and Palestinians on Israeli civilians last year during the height of the recent terror wave. In October 2015, one person was killed and two were wounded in Jerusalem when a Palestinian terrorist rammed his car into a bus stop, then got out and attacked the victims with a knife; in December, another terrorist wounded three civilians in the same type of attack.
