Natan Meir, husband of Dafna Meir, an Israeli woman who was viciously murdered outside of her home in Otniel in January, sent outgoing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a strongly worded letter condemning Ki-moon’s indifference towards Meir and his daughter, Ranana, during their UN visit in April.

Natan and Ranana were brought to the UN in New York by One Family Fund, an organization that supports terror victims and their families, and Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon. They had no doubt hoped that sharing their story would spark compassion and positive rapport between the Israeli representatives and the international body.

During her speech, Ranana described the unimaginable pain of living without her beloved mother, something which she must deal with every single day. But she emphasized how it would never occur to her to harm another human being, even if she hated them, because that is not how she was raised. She pleaded, “Help us create peace through love. Help us see that there is good in everyone.”

Natan then took the podium and spoke out against terrorism, saying he always looks for ways to practice “faith, tolerance, and love.” Natan suggested to the international community, “Let us build a bridge instead of tensions. Let us encourage instead of condemn. Instead of incitement, let us create love.”

Unfortunately their pleas for sympathy, tolerance, and kindness fell on deaf ears.

Fight terror by planting trees in Israel

In Natan’s letter to Ban Ki-moon, the widower wrote, “[Danny Danon] introduced me and my daughter and told our story. Not one UN ambassador bothered to come and comfort by 17-year-old daughter. No one came to shake our hands. No one called or met with us before or after. Not one letter.”

“Even you, Mr. Secretary General, you were sitting at the front of that meeting and you did not open your mouth nor look in the eyes of someone in who is in anguish and pain,” Meir continued.

The outgoing Secretary-General is known for his general lack of sympathy for Israel’s plight, choosing instead to focus on the Palestinian people. Ki-moon has even gone so far as to claim understanding for the ongoing terror attacks at the hands of the Palestinians against Israelis. It is “human nature to react to occupation,” he has said.

Natan admonished the Secretary-General and the UN for ignoring the blatant double-standard he and his daughter experienced during their visit. “In our presence, the Palestinian representative complained that hundreds of Palestinian children are in Israeli prisons. One of the children he talked about murdered my wife! Despite the terrible scandal of misrepresentation, nobody prevented him from continuing his speech,” he wrote.

Despite his grievances, Natan ended on a note of peace, saying, “We have been allowed patiently to advance our shared lives for generations to come. If you still insist on helping, please help us to build bridges and connections between people without borders and fences.”
