Zionism and Racism

In 1975, at the instigation of the Arab and Soviet blocks, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the infamous resolution 3379, equating Zionism with racism. [1]

Although formally rescinded in 1991, the UN continues to cultivate that lie, as demonstrated by the three Durban conferences and the NGO Forum. Ostensibly held to combat racism and xenophobia, Durban I quickly turned on Israel, with the NGO Forum further charging that Israel is a “racist, apartheid state” that was guilty of “racist crimes including war crimes, acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing.” [2] Of all General Assembly resolutions critical toward a specific nation, three-quarters have been directed against Israel.[3] This organization, which piously presents itself as dedicated to fighting racism, cynically pursues the racist agenda of demonizing and delegitimizing the one Jewish country on earth.

The irony in this is that the Jews, as a people, have historically been at the forefront of progressive movements for democracy, social justice, and human rights. [4] This is in part due to the moral imperatives of the Torah, and the admonition of the Prophets, but also because of their national experience as a pariah people, driven from their land, wandering the earth, homeless and helpless for almost two millennia. They have been the quintessential persecuted minority. They have experienced a degree of racism unparalleled by any other ethnicity, so much so that there is a unique term, anti-Semitism, coined for the racism directed against Jews.

Without a state to champion their rights, the Jewish people were subject to the most horrendous and abject discrimination by their host countries. Forced to wear identifying garments by both Christendom and Islam, they were easily singled out for persecution. The objects of scorn and derision, they were heavily taxed, prohibited from working in many professions, often confined to ghettos, deprived of defense in court, the object of false accusations and mob attacks, the victims of inquisitions, crusades, pogroms, and ultimately the Holocaust.

In Europe they were accused of outrageous libels, such as using the blood of Christian children to bake Passover matzah, or poisoning wells to spread the Black Plague. [5] In Muslim countries they were second-class dhimmis, having to do obeisance to their rulers, who regarded them as the descendants of monkeys and pigs. This is the racism and anti-Semitism still taught in Arab schools, and disseminated by Arab media. [6]

Ironically, the General Assembly remains silent about anti-Jewish and anti-Israel racism. Little children are taught and encouraged to recite songs with lyrics like, “Oh, sons of Zion, Oh, the most evil of creatures, Oh, barbaric apes,” [7] and they are taught to avow their desire to die as suicide warriors. The Palestinian media slanders Israel with libelous accusations such as poisoning their water supply, planting radioactive materials in the civilian population, dropping poisoned candy next to schools, [8] and even recruiting dolphins and vultures to spy on them. [9] School textbooks (which incidentally do not show Israel on maps of the Middle East) indoctrinate children with anti-Semitic stereotypes and statements like, “Jews are cowards whom Allah has prepared for the fires of Hell.” Friday worshipers at Palestinian mosques are harangued with sermons of hatred against Jews and incited to perpetrate acts of violence.

On The Children’s Show, little children are taught songs by Sesame Street-style puppets about becoming suicide bombers and taking up machine guns against Israel. A commercial encourages children to drop their toys and pick up rocks to do battle with Israel. There is footage of Hamas summer camps training twelve-year-olds in combat and weapons use, staging mock kidnappings to “liberate Palestine” (which includes all of Israel). [10] Anti-Semitic literature such as Hitler’s Mein Kampf, and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion are circulated, promoted, and eagerly read. There is a concerted campaign by Arab and Palestinian leaders to instill racial hatred against Israel and the Jewish people, portrayed as colonialists and Imperialists.

Far from being a form of colonialism or imperialism, Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people to return and rebuild their ancestral homeland, which was forcefully taken from them. This people, who found no home, no safe haven among the nations of the world for 1,800 years, were finally granted the right to self-determination by the League of Nations after World War I. They have a naturally acquired empathy for the oppressed and downtrodden of the world and desire nothing but to live in peace and good relations with their neighbors. Those who accuse Israel of racism forget that there are 1,700,000 Arab-Israeli citizens with all the rights and privileges of the Jews alongside whom they live and work as equals. These people are of the same “race” as those Palestinians who live across the Green Line. Israel takes action against the Palestinian Arabs only to protect its citizens from the daily acts of terrorism, which, in conjunction with Arab-Israeli wars, have already claimed the lives of 23,477 Jews. [11] That’s not racism, that’s self-preservation.
