Benjamin Netanyahu with Naama Issachar

Naama Issachar was freed today after 10 months in a Russian prison, returning to the Jewish state with her mother in the prime minister’s plane.

On Thursday morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, securing the release of Israeli backpacker Naama Issachar, who was arrested on drug charges as she changed planes in Russia, flying home from India.

Putin pardoned the 27-year-old Israeli, who had been handed a seven and a half year sentence that was widely condemned as beyond excessive, with doubt swirling around key facts in the case. Issachar, for her part, claimed she never confessed to drug possession and was forced to sign a document in Russian without a translator present.

Issachar’s mother worked tirelessly to secure her daughter’s release, lobbying Netanyahu and appealing directly to Putin. On Thursday, Naama came home!
