Trump to Host Traditional Chanukah Party at White House

Trump is continuing the American tradition of celebrating Jewish heroism on Chanukah and will host a party in honor of the holiday.

President Donald Trump will host a Chanukah party at the White House on December 7, continuing the American tradition of celebrating Jewish heroism on this holiday

Maggie Haberman of The New York Times was first to tweet about the party, and an administration official confirmed the news to The Times of Israel on Sunday.

The White House Chanukah party is hosted by the US President and First Lady to recognize and celebrate the Jewish festival of Chanukah. The tradition was established in 2001, during the administration of George W. Bush. The guest list includes hundreds of American Jewish politicians, organization heads, and school and yeshiva deans.

The reception is one of a number of ways the president recognizes the holiday, along with a proclamation or message, and participation by the president or a member of his staff in the lighting of the National Menorah on the National Mall.

Chanukah begins this year on the evening of December 12 and will last until December 20.

Chanukah, an eight-day holiday, commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks who ruled much of the Land of Israel, banned the Jewish religion on pain of death, and defiled the Holy Temple.
