Following a stumble which plastered the question of Hillary Clinton’s physical fitness across international headlines, she and rival for the presidency Donald Trump have both hastened to release medical information in order to reassure voters of their good health.
Clinton, who revealed on Sunday that she had been diagnosed with pneumonia after videos of her collapsing at a 9/11 memorial event fed long-standing shadowy rumors of her poor health, on Wednesday released a letter from her doctor declaring that the 68-year-old is physically fit for office.
Aside from pneumonia, which Dr. Lisa Bardack classified as non-contagious and mild, Clinton’s evaluation revealed some allergies, a case of sinusitis earlier in the year, a normal mammogram, and ongoing treatment for an existing thyroid condition, as well as prescriptions for Clarinex, Coumadin, and a vitamin B-12 supplement. Clarinex treats allergies and Coumadin is a blood thinner which Clinton has taken since having a blood clot in 2012.
Dr. Bardack concluded, “She is recovering well [from the pneumonia] with antibiotics and rest. She continues to remain healthy and fit to serve as President of the United States.”
Trump, 70, would be the oldest person elected to the office of American president. He has not released any official medical records, but went on The Dr. Oz show to discuss his own medical condition, presenting a summary of a recent check-up at Lennox Hill Hospital in response to Dr. Oz’s question on why he has not yet shared his medical information.
Trump’s interview with Dr. Oz was taped on Tuesday, but will not air until Thursday. Audience members reported on what they heard, saying Trump had expressed a desire to lose five to ten pounds and revealed that he has high testosterone levels.
He also has a body mass index (BMI) of 30. Normal body weight falls between 18 to 24, and 25-29 are classified as overweight. People with BMIs of 30 or up are classed as moderately obese by the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the audience, Trump said he does not exercise but he does enjoy golf.
Donald Trump Talks Health With Dr. Oz
The new medical report was compiled by Dr. Harold Bornstein, who drew ridicule and incredulity with his first publicized letter on Trump’s health. Dr. Bornstein called Trump’s strength and stamina “extraordinary” and his lab results “astonishingly excellent” – terms, media pointed out, not generally used by medical professionals.
Trump’s campaign has said it will release more detailed medical records to the public within the coming days.
