On a television interview on Channel 2 on Saturday, Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Minister of Public Security, accused Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, of being responsible for the death of Israelis by permitting extreme incitement on his social networking website.
“Facebook, which has brought a positive revolution to the world, since the rise of Islamic State and the wave of terror, has become a monster,” stated Erdan. “The dialogue, the incitement, the lies of the young Palestinian generation are happening on the Facebook platform.”
Erdan also accused the social networking site of hindering police efforts to prevent criminal activity.
“Facebook today sabotages, it should be known, sabotages the work of the Israeli police, because when the Israeli police approach them, and it is regarding a resident of Judea and Samaria, Facebook does not cooperate,” he said.
“It also sets a very high bar for removing inciteful content and posts,” Erdan stated. “To my great sorrow, some of the blood of those who have been murdered, including in the latest attacks, of Hallel, [is on Zuckerberg’s hands] ,” he added.
Hallel Yaffa Ariel, a 13 year-old girl from Kiryat Arba, was stabbed to death in her home on Thursday by Mohammed Tareirah. Tareirah, a 17 year-old Palestinian, made several posts on his Facebook page expressing a desire to become a “shahid”, a martyr who dies while killing the enemies of Islam. Tareirah also made several posts praising attacks on Israelis.
“It’s time for Israelis to flood him with demands to clamp down on this platform he founded and from which he makes billions,” Erdan said, calling for action. “We can’t talk about incitement — on social media sites, in the media, in the schools — [without talking about] the leadership. This leader, unfortunately is seen by the world as a moderate figure. His time is up,” Erdan said.
Apparently, Erdan is not the only person who believes Facebook gives a free pass to terror groups. In January, Shurat Hadin, an NGO which advocates for Israeli victims of terror, set up a crowdfunding campaign called “Zuckerberg don’t kill us”. Their intention was to erect billboards near the Zuckerberg’s mansion to protest the policies of his social networking site that permit incitement against Jews.
