A 48 year-old unarmed security guard at a mall in Maale Adumim, east of Jerusalem, was critically wounded in an ax attack at around 1:00 am Thursday night. He was taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem with stab wounds to his upper body and it was announced while he was in surgery that his wounds were life-threatening.

The attacker is still at large. The Police said it is unclear how the terrorist was at the mall late at night an hour after it closed. It is presumed he had a permit to work in Ma’ale Adumim. Arab workers will not be allowed into Ma’ale Adumim until Sunday.

Investigators say the attack appears to be a nationalistically motivated terror attack.

The mayor of Ma’ale Adumim, Benny Kashriel, said to the press:

“We have increased security and patrols. Ma’ale Adumim has been quiet during all of the intifadas, during Protective Edge, and even during this recent wave of terror there hasn’t been a single incident here, so this attack hurts a lot. We really hope that we will be secure again. We work together and have good relations with our neighbors,” he said.
