Iran Unveils New Air Defense Missile System

While Western powers negotiated and signed the Iran nuclear deal, which provided Iran with a huge influx of cash, the Islamic Republic is busy spending money on building up its military capabilities.

Iran unveiled its new domestically produced long-range air defense missile system on Sunday.

The Bavar-373, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts to intercept cruise missiles, drones, combat aircraft and ballistic missiles, was officially put on display in Tehran during President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to an exhibition of Iran’s Defense Ministry’s achievements and in honor of Iran’s Defense Industry Day.

It is reportedly a homemade version of the sophisticated Russian S-300 missile defense system. The Iranian version claims to have superior features over the original Russian model, supposedly with increased mobility, agility and reduced launch-preparation time.

Rouhani was briefed by Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan on different stages of manufacturing Iran’s “national turbojet engine. “

Dehqan also announced the country’s plan to produce supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles in the near future.

“We have been able to increase the missiles’ speed and God willing, we will build supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles in the near future,” Dehqan said.

Iran’s military industry in recent years has made much progress in manufacturing a broad range of military hardware, making its army somewhat self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Despite the implementation of the nuclear deal signed a year ago, Iran has proceeded with its military intensification, and has conducted several weapons tests, in violation of UN sanctions.
