Rallies in Europe and the US protesting President Donald Trump’s acknowledgement of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital are being accompanied by explicit, blood-curdling calls for violence against Jews. Some of these calls to violence are already being answered.
A rally of Muslims in New York City’s Times Square on Saturday began with the regular angry anti-Israel chants but soon took on a different tone as the crowd began calling for a Muslim holy war against the Jews.
The chanting began with, “We don’t want no two-state, we want ‘48”. This is an explicit refusal of the two-state solution, which would create a Palestinian state on the land conquered by Israel in the defensive Six-Day War in 1967. The number ‘48’ is a reference to the 1948 United Nations Partition Plan which led to the modern State of Israel.
The crowd then began chanting the more inciteful slogan, “With spirit and blood we’ll redeem al-Aqsa, there is only one solution; intifada revolution.” Al-Aqsa is the silver-domed mosque on the Temple Mount, but the Palestinians now use the term to refer to the golden Dome of the Rock, which stands on the site of the Jewish Temple. “Intifada” means a violent confrontation.
The rally turned decidedly ugly when the crowd began calling not only for an end to Israel, but for a massacre of the Jewish people. Demonstrators started chanting, “Jews remember Khaybar, the army of Muhammed is returning.” Khaybar was the name of a Jewish-majority oasis city about 90 miles north of Medina in Saudi Arabia which existed in the time of Muhammed.
Muslims slaughtered the city’s Jews in 628 CE. The Arabic chant “Khaybar Khaybar, ya yahud, Jaish Muhammad, sa yahud,” which means, “Jews, remember Khaybar, the army of Muhammad is returning,” is used as a battle cry when attacking Jews or Israelis.
The crowd also chanted the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement motto, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” Though BDS claims to exercise economic pressure to force Israel to negotiate a two-state solution, this motto reveals an agenda that precludes the existence of any Jewish state in the region.
A video of the Times Square rally was produced by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). In the MEMRI video, an imam from New Jersey is seen declaring that the Palestinian Authority should end all negotiations with Israel.
“We have to start a new intifada,” the imam said to the crowd.
“The Palestinians fight with whatever they can,” another speaker said. “They fight with rocks, they fight with rockets from Gaza, they fight with guns, their children fight.
Yet another speaker revealed more of their true anger at the American policy towards Israel.
“We should be just as angry that the [the US government] has an embassy in Tel Aviv or Jaffa as we are about Jerusalem,” she said. “Because every inch of Palestine is Palestinian land.”
“It’s up to all of us here including everyone in this crowd, to keep this resistance going if we want to see Israel fall within our lifetime.”
The Times Square rally was echoed by a Friday night rally in front of the US Embassy in London. Approximately 3,000 pro-Palestinian protesters began by chanting “Down down USA” and “Hands off Jerusalem”, but the the chants quickly became “Khaybar Khaybar, ya yahud, Jaish Muhammad, sa yahud.”

A rally in Vienna on Friday also centered around the Arabic call to kill Jews.
On the same night, a rally of 200 pro-Palestinian protesters in Malmö, Sweden culminated in a call to “shoot Jews”.
“We have announced the intifada from Malmö. We want our freedom back, and we will shoot the Jews,” the protesters chanted, according to the public radio station.
The rally was followed by approximately 20 men firebombing a nearby synagogue, trapping several people inside the building.
