II SAMUEL 5:7

The nation of Israel stood united behind King David, and he succeeded in conquering the holy city of Jerusalem from the pagan Jebusites. His palace was located in the City of David, just outside the present walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. After years of archaeological excavations, an ancient Canaanite fortress was uncovered at this site. As today’s verse describes, when King David entered the city he conquered the “stronghold of Zion” from the Jebusites, quite possibly this very fortress discovered thousands of years later! This impressive fortress protected the Gihon spring where Solomon was later anointed king (I Kings 1:38), making it possible to access the spring from within the city of Jerusalem.
