The Israel Air Force hit several military targets in Syria after mortar shells breached the border and exploded in the northern Golan Heights on Wednesday, said the IDF.

Several mortars, apparently spillover fire from the ongoing Syrian civil conflict, were fired into Israel’s Golan on Wednesday afternoon. No injuries or damage were reported.

The IAF retaliated with airstrikes against rocket launchers located in the Syrian-occupied Golan.

The IDF holds the Syrian government responsible for any military encroachment at the border and routinely retaliates against Syrian military positions after incidents like these, which have become common since the bloody conflict between the Syrian regime and rebel forces began in 2011.

In a statement, the IDF emphasized that it “will not permit any attempt to threaten Israel’s sovereignty or the safety of its people.”

Last month after a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in the southern Israeli city of Sderot, the IAF reacted immediately with a barrage of fire striking over 50 Hamas targets.
