This verse describes the Almighty creating man out of both the physical world and the upper, spiritual world – the body is formed from the dust of the earth, and the soul is gifted from the very essence of God. Little known is the etymological connection between the Hebrew word “adamah”, which means ground, and the Hebrew word for man, “adam”. This link is not random, rather the Hebrew language comes to teach us an important lesson of the relationship between humankind and the ground. Just as man comes from the “dust of the ground” and inhabits it, his duty in this world is to recognize that his own potential directly corresponds to a duty to the earth, which was also created by God in His great kindness.
