GENESIS 21:31

Abraham names the place where he entered into a covenant with Abimelech Beersheba. Its Hebrew name, ‘Be’er sheva,’ is made up of two words. ‘Be’er’ means well, hinting to the fact that this covenant acknowledged Abraham’s right to the well. The second part of the word is made up of the root ש,ב,ע, ‘sheva,’ which means both seven and oath. Thus, ‘Be’er sheva’ can mean either Well of the Seven or Well of the Oath. The double meaning hints to both the seven female sheep set aside by Abraham as verification of the oath made in Beersheba, and the oath made regarding the well itself.
