An unnamed European Union representatives travelling from Jordan into Israel via the Allenby crossing on Thursday was caught at the border with a huge quantity of gold, steroids, and smart phones. When officials searched the vehicle they were shocked to find over 700 smart-phones, dozens of kilograms of gold bullion and solid gold jewelry, and illegal steroids. Altogether, the contraband was estimated to be worth over $2.5 million.
The EU diplomat, a consultant to EU’s mission to the Middle East, was detained and later released, and his driver – an Arab resident of the Atarot neighborhood of Jerusalem – was detained for investigation. The driver had his arrest extended to next Sunday by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.
