The UN passed Resolution 1701 in order to stabilize the Israel-Lebanon border and prevent further wars.

During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Hezbollah fired rockets from Lebanon at Israeli civilians in northern Israel while hiding its weapons and launch sites in residential neighborhoods, endangering the lives of Lebanese civilians as well.

Resolution 1701 was passed by the United Nations Security Council immediately after the war in order to stabilize the Israel-Lebanon border, calling for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon.

However, the Hezbollah terror organization has since continued to violate international law and has intensified tension in the region.

Lt. Col. Amnon Shefler and Maj. Ben Wallhaus from the IDF International Law Department explain Resolution 1701, its implications, and what it means for Israel and Lebanon today.
