Iran celebrates the 1979 U.S. embassy takeover with thousands calling for the destruction of America and Israel.
Hundreds of Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy during the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. They took 52 Americans hostage for 444 days after Washington refused to hand over the Shah, who was in the U.S.
Iranians marked the anniversary of the hostile takeover by burning American flags and an image of President Donald Trump while chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.” They also displayed a ballistic missile for the first time during the annual event.
