Iran should be a successful country but it must not acquire nuclear weapons, US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

Dismissing reports that the U.S. and Israel plan to destroy Iranian nuclear infrastructure as “greatly exaggerated,” he instead advocated for a verified nuclear peace agreement.

He called for immediate efforts to negotiate such a deal.

“I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens, ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED,” Trump wrote.

“I would much prefer a Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement, which will let Iran peacefully grow and prosper. We should start working on it immediately, and have a big Middle East Celebration when it is signed and completed. G-d Bless the Middle East!”

On Tuesday, The White House announced that President Trump had signed a memorandum to “restore maximum pressure” on Iran, “denying Iran all paths to a nuclear weapon, and countering Iran’s malign influence abroad.”

The memorandum “directs the Secretary of the Treasury to impose maximum economic pressure on the Government of Iran, including by sanctioning or imposing enforcement mechanisms on those acting in violation of existing sanctions,” according to the White House.

“The Secretary of State will also modify or rescind existing sanctions waivers and cooperate with the Secretary of Treasury to implement a campaign aimed at driving Iran’s oil exports to zero.”

In addition, the memorandum calls on the Attorney General to “pursue all available legal steps to investigate, disrupt, and prosecute financial and logistical networks, operatives, or front groups inside the United States that are sponsored by Iran or an Iranian terror proxy.”

“The previous Administration’s tolerance of Iran’s threats to American citizens and companies ends now,” the White House said.

At the same time, Trump on Tuesday told reporters that Iran “would be obliterated” if it were to assassinate him.

“I’ve left instructions,” he added.

On Wednesday, Iranian Minister Abbas Araqchi indicated Iran was open to dialogue on the issue of nuclear weapons, while claiming that “maximum pressure” was doomed to failure.

“If the main concern is that Iran should not pursue nuclear weapons, this is achievable and not a complicated issue. Iran’s position is clear: it is a member of the Non Proliferation Treaty, and the Supreme Leader’s fatwa has already clarified our stance [against weapons of mass destruction],” he said, according to Reuters.

“Maximum pressure is a failed experience and trying it again will lead to another failure.”
