Kenyan Runner Wins Jerusalem Marathon

A Kenyan runner won the sixth International Jerusalem Marathon today.   Kipkogey Shadrack, 25-years-old, won the marathon with a time of 2:16:33.

About 25,000 local athletes participated in the event and an additional 2,500 came from 61 countries to participate in the sixth annual race held in the Holy City.

The event featured a full marathon of 26 miles, a half marathon, a 10 kilometer race, a 5 kilometer race, and shorter “community” races. In addition, a 16 kilometer hand-cycle race was held and an 800 meter special needsrace.

The race was opened by Jerusalem mayor, Nir Barkat, who is a marathon runner. The course ran from near the Knesset, circled around the Hebrew University in Givat Ram, passes through the Old City, and finishes up in Gan Sacher.

Many main streets were closed to traffic and over 1, police and an additional 800 private security personnel were on hand for the event. No violence was reported.
