The Hebrew word for the Jordan is “Yarden” which means “descent,” referring to the river’s sources that come from the melted snow of Mount Hermon, which flows down through the Sea of Galilee before reaching the river. The waters continue to descend to the Dead Sea, below sea level. When the Israelites entered the Holy Land for the first time, the river split so that the Jewish people could cross over on dry land.
