The Shamir Medical Center (Assaf HaRofeh) near Tel Aviv reported Israel’s first birth of 2023 — a baby boy born to Liel and Sergey Levitsky of Rehovot.

The baby , born just after midnight, weighed in at 3.72 kg.

“What fun it is to start the new year with the expansion of the family, with optimism and joy,” the parents said. “We also gave birth to our two previous sons in Asaf Harofeh, and here the third one joins the family. We looked forward to the birth every day and how fun it was that it arrived shortly after the beginning of the new civil year.”

Helping with the country’s first birth were Dr. Adi Teitler and midwife Yasmin Gabai.

“We wish everyone a happy new year, with happy news, health and sweet beginnings, just like with us,” the parents said.

The birth follows up on figures released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistic that the country’s population grew 2.2% in 2022. The bureau attributed the increase to a jump in immigration compared to significantly lower numbers in 2021 during the COVID pandemic.
