Two Syrian mortars landed in the Israeli Golan Heights on Saturday, leading to a retaliation the Israeli Air Force (IAF) hitting Syrian artillery targets Saturday night. It is believed the mortars were spillover from fighting in Syria and not intended to hit Israel. The artillery targets were part of Syrian President Bashar Assad‘s military force.
The IDF made a statement saying, “The Syrian government is accountable for this blatant breach of Israeli sovereignty, the IDF will continue to act in order to safeguard Israel and its civilians.”
There were a total of four Syrian mortars that landed in Israel this week, and a total of three Israeli retaliations. On Sunday, a mortar fired from Syria landed in an open area on the Israeli side of the demilitarized zone. There were no injuries or damage reported. Later in the day, the IDF struck Syrian army artillery targets in retaliation.
Wednesday evening, a mortar landed in an open field near Kibbutz Merom Golan. No injuries or damage were reported. The IAF hit several rocket launchers on the Syrian side of the border in response.
