The Hebrew word ‘yarad’ means “he came down.” When the Bible makes references to “going up” or “going down,” it is often spiritual, rather than physical. Therefore, going to Jerusalem is always referred to as “going up,” while leaving Jerusalem is always “going down.” Since Jehoshaphat is going from Jerusalem in Judea to the less holy Northern Kingdom of Israel, the Bible says he “came down.” In Modern Hebrew, the same expressions are used. Immigrating to Israel is known as ‘aliyah,’ ascent, while leaving is known as ‘yeridah,’ descent.
