In previous verses we are told that the combined forces of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Menashe had between them an impressive forty four thousand seven hundred and sixty troops of superlative quality. And yet, we are told that the only reason they were victorious in battle is because they trusted in God that He would help them and save them. Success in the Land of Israel is not tied to physical capability and effort alone, though they are very important, but also to faith and trust in God. One will only be successful in the land if he has Divine favor.
