Though weak and downgraded to Category 1 with winds at 75 MPH, Hurricane Matthew was still the most powerful storm to hit the East Coast of the US since 2007. It struck on Saturday, killing at least eleven people, while nearly 1.6 million homes in the south-east were left without electricity. More than a million people were ordered to evacuate in Florida and Georgia, and 300,000 more were evacuated in South Carolina.

Matthew made landfall last Tuesday as a Category 5 hurricane, hitting the Caribbean with winds of over 145 MPH. Officials announced that nearly 900 people were killed in Haiti last week, and at least 28,000 homes were damaged, leaving at least 350,000 people in need of some kind of assistance.

USAID is airlifting more than 480 metric tons of relief supplies to Haiti, with some of the aid being delivered by the US Navy.
