At 6:35 AM Friday morning, a 3.8 Richter earthquake gently shook residents of Northern Israel awake as the first rains of the season fell. No damage or injuries were reported. The epicenter of the quake was reported to be about 3 miles north of the Sea of Galilee.
On Tuesday, a 4.4 Richter quake rocked Southern Israel. The quake’s epicenter was in the Sinai Peninsula.
This comes two weeks after a 3.6 Richter tremor slightly further north in Lebanon. In May, the same region just north of Israel experienced a 4.8 Richter quake.
The quakes are caused by tectonic shifting in the Dead Sea Fault which is part of the Syrian-African Rift, extending from Syria to Mozambique. A series of 4.9 Richter quakes centered in the Sinai Peninsula rocked Southern Israel six months ago.
The region has suffered major earthquakes as recently as 1927, when a 6.2 magnitude quake killed over 500 people. Another in 1837 killed as many as 5,000 people. One of God’s names in the Bible, ‘Elohim’, signifies the divine aspect of judgement as expressed through nature and the Bible is replete with references to earthquakes as a sign of divine anger.
