The Hebrew University of Jerusalem announced in a press release on Sunday that it will offer full scholarships to former hostages.

The scholarships will cover tuition for a three-year degree in any field of study.

Additionally, funds will be set aside for the children of former hostages when they reach the age to enroll in university.

The scholarship will also cover personalized academic support, psychological assistance, and career counseling, all designed to provide a strong foundation for their recovery and successful reintegration.

Seven female hostages have been released in the past two weeks as part of phase one of the hostage agreement.

On October 7, 2023, 251 people were kidnapped from southern Israel. During a pause in fighting the following month, 105 civilians were released.

A total of 33 hostages are scheduled for release in the first phase of the agreement.

Currently, 87 hostages remain in Gaza, including the bodies of 37 individuals confirmed dead by the IDF.

Prof. Tamir Shefer, the university’s rector, explained that the scholarship program aims to help former hostages “rebuild a hopeful future and provide a solid foundation for their long rehabilitation journey.”

“As Israel’s leading academic institution, we believe in the transformative power of higher education and its potential to drive both personal and societal change,” Shefer said.

Since the beginning of the war, Hebrew University has been offering resources to students serving in or returning from the IDF, as well as those displaced by the conflict.

For these students, the university has provided funding, tutoring, and flexible class schedules.
