Our Rabbis explain that today’s verse is one of the most important sources for the daily prayer known as Shacharit (sha-kha-reet) said by Jews each morning before carrying out the day’s activities. It was his sincere devotion to God that prompted Abraham to arise “early in the morning”, as he could not contain his joy at the opportunity to speak and praise his Creator. Abraham was not only the source of prayer, but also teaches us the tremendous character trait of giving. After undergoing a painful surgery, Abraham was simultaneously recovering while also hoping for the chance to welcome guests into his home. Despite his pain, Abraham was more focused on those who lack, than on his own needs. An inspiration to all, Abraham’s generosity no doubt inspires us to emulate his actions and help those who cannot help themselves.
