Almost exactly 16 years after an identical event ended in a horrible lynching, two IDF soldiers inadvertently entered the Arab village of Dura, near Hebron on Thursday. A reenactment of the original tragedy was prevented by a rescue operation involving a large military force.
The two soldiers entered the village in a military vehicle and Arabs began to attack them with rock-throwing. The IDF force sent to rescue them did not engage the residents and the two soldiers were unharmed.
In July, IDF troops were attacked by rioters in Dura as they demolished the homes of two terrorists who had killed an Israeli near Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Three weeks ago, two female IDF soldiers mistakenly entered the Arab city of Tulkarem after being misled by the navigation app, Waze. They were rescued by Palestinian police and released to Israeli authorities.
In a similar incident in February attributed to following GPS directions that led soldiers in Qalandiya near Jerusalem, the rescue operation resulted in one Palestinian being killed in clashes with the IDF.
Such incidents bring back memories of the tragic case that took place almost exactly 16 years ago. On October 12, 2000, two IDF reservists inadvertently entered Ramallah. They were stopped at a Palestinian police checkpoint and taken to a PA police station, where a mob surrounded the building. The two were taken by the mob and killed, their bodies mutilated and put on display for a public celebration. PA Police were reported to have taken part in the celebrations.
