VIDEO: Ethiopian Family Celebrates the Festival of Freedom in Israel

Ethiopian aliyah

Another name for Passover is the Festival of Freedom. In this video – made for children, but also excellent for adults! – an Ethiopian Jewish family celebrates their freedom in Israel.

This family is among roughly 125,000 Ethiopian Jews who made aliyah, immigration to Israel, over recent decades. To them, the festival of Passover, which commemorates the Jewish exodus from Egypt, has special meaning.

In the early 1970s, thousands fled Ethiopia by foot to Sudan, just as the Israelite slaves had fled Egypt; many died along the way. In the 1980s, tens of thousands were airlifted to Israel.

Approximately 9,000 Jews remain in Ethiopia, and the Israeli government is working on bringing them as well.

See how happy this family is to celebrate the Jewish holidays in Israel and learn more about the Passover seder.
