An Air France flight en route from Mauritius to Paris was forced to make an emergency landing in Kenya after a suspicious device was found on board.
Pilots landed flight AF463 in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa after a bomb was suspected on board, police spokesman Charles Owino told media.
The flight landed at Moi International Airport at approximately 12:37 am local time. “It requested an emergency landing when a device suspected to be an explosive was discovered in the lavatory,” Owino said.
The flight took off from Mauritius at 9 pm with 14 crew members and 459 passengers headed to Charles de Gaulle airport.
All passengers were safely evacuated and the device was removed from the plane for inspection. “The object, believed to be an explosive device has successfully been retrieved from the aircraft,” the Kenya Airport Authorities posted on Twitter.
Benoit Luchini, a French national aboard the flight, told the media upon disembarking, “The plane just went down slowly, slowly, slowly, so we just realized probably something was wrong.”
He added that the Air France crew members were “great, they were just wonderful. So they keep everybody calm. We did not know what was happening.”
