President Donald Trump has shown outstanding courage and conviction by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem. We must thank him for this historic move!
President Donald Trump officially declared the United States’ recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December, and he completed the historic move this week when he relocated the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
“Jerusalem is the capital the Jewish people established in ancient times. Today Jerusalem is the seat of Israel’s government,” Trump stated upon announcing his decision. “Today, we finally acknowledged the obvious, that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. This is nothing more than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do.”
In 1995, Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy and Relocation Act, which recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and approved moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Until Trump’s presidency however, successive US presidents have signed a waiver every six months in order to keep the embassy in Tel Aviv, citing concerns that a move to Jerusalem could hinder the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Trump courageously reversed this policy, and 23 years after Congress passed the momentous bill he acted on the wishes of the American people and moved the embassy to Israel’s capital.
In a video address at the embassy inauguration on Monday, Trump said the move to Jerusalem has been a “long time coming.”
“Israel is a sovereign nation with the right, like every other sovereign nation, to declare its own capital, yet for many years we failed to acknowledge the obvious, the plain reality that Israel’s capital is Jerusalem,” Trump said, correcting the grievous historical error.
“President Trump, you have made history,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the dedication ceremony. “Thank you, President Trump, for having the courage to keep your promises.”
We, too, should show appreciation to the US and President Trump for this important move, which has already inspired other countries to follow suit.
