Islamist Attack in Egyptian Mosque Kills Over 300

At least 305 people were killed when the Rawdah Sufi mosque in Bir al Abed in the northern Sinai was attacked on Friday by 25-30 men armed with automatic rifles. 27 children were among the dead and an additional 128 people were injured.

The attackers drove up to the mosque in five SUV’s and took positions at the entrances. An explosive was set off in the building adjacent to the mosque and the Islamists killed worshippers as they exited the mosque. The attackers, wearing military fatigues, had heavy machine guns and had long beards and hair. At least one man was carrying a flag of the Islamic State (ISIS), though no group has taken credit for the attack. The assailants continued their assault, firing on ambulances as they arrived.

The mosque marks the birthplace of the founder of Sufism. Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam Islamists consider to be heretical. ISIS has targeted Sufis in the past and has also killed more than 100 Coptic Christians in Egypt in the past year.

The Egyptian air force responded immediately, firing at attackers’ vehicles fleeing the scene. Three days of mourning was declared by the Egyptian government.

The Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, appeared on television Friday night.

“This act will only increase our will and unity,”al-Sisi said. “The police and military will avenge our martyrs and restore peace and security.”

“We will respond with brute force to combat these terrorists and deviants … This is an attempt to deter us from fighting terrorism and to destroy our will, but we are steadfast, and I say to all Egyptians, the battle you are fighting is the most honorable.”
