The UN Human Rights Council’s condemnation of Israel while ignoring real atrocities is “a profound absurdity,” UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson stated.
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson condemned the United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) criticism of Israel over its bombing of Hezbollah positions in the Golan Heights.
The Guardian reported Tuesday that Johnson told British Members of Parliament it was “absolutely preposterous” that there should be a motion condemning Israel’s policy in the Golan Heights, when “in that region of Syria we have seen the most appalling barbarity by the Assad regime.”
He called it a “profound absurdity.”
The UK mission to the UN in Geneva recently put the UN “on notice” for its anti-Israel bias, saying that if things do not change, “in the future we will adopt a policy of voting against all resolutions concerning Israel’s conduct.”
“Israel is a population of eight million in a world of seven billion. Yet since its foundation, the human rights council has adopted 135 country-specific resolutions; 68 of which [have been] against Israel. Justice is blind and impartial. This selective focus on Israel is neither. Israel is the only country permanently on the human rights council’s agenda,” the UK mission said in a statement.
The US, too, has threatened to withdraw from the UNHRC. American Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stated this week that “the era of Israel bashing” at the UN is over.
Johnson also said he opposed state boycotts of goods produced in Judea and Samaria and the Golan Heights, saying the choice should be left to consumers.
