There has been at least one fatality and 12 injured from Hurricane Harvey, a category four hurricane with winds up to 130 MPH, since it made landfall near Corpus Christi on Friday night.
More than 300,000 people were without electricity as a result of high winds. At a press conference Saturday afternoon, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said it may be “several days before outages can be addressed,” due to continued high winds.
The largest threat comes from flooding. “Harvey is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 15 to 30 inches and isolated maximum amounts of 40 inches over the middle and upper Texas coast through next Wednesday,” the Hurricane Center reports. The danger was compounded by tidal storm surges. The hurricane center warned that some areas will see as much as 13 feet of storm surge and large, destructive waves. Some areas along the Gulf Coast have been evacuated as a result.
The hurricane has since been downgraded to a Category One tropical storm with sustained winds of around 70 MPH.
