On a televised interview, a Palestinian official in charge of an anti-drug campaign stated that Israel was to blame for the rising use of illegal drugs among Arab youth. Not only has this claim become commonplace among Palestinian officials at all levels of the government, but it mirrors similar claims made by the United Nations blaming Israel for all of the PA woes, including domestic abuse.

Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), a nongovernmental organization (NGO) and media watchdog group, has been following this disturbing trend to demonize Israel for Palestinian social issues. On Thursday, they published an article reporting on an interview on Palestinian television in which Issam Jweihan, the Coordinator of the Project of the War on Drugs in Jerusalem, stated that the “Israeli occupation” targeted Palestinian youth with drugs. The program’s host stated that illegal drugs are an “unconventional weapon” being used in Israel’s “unconventional war”.

PMW has documented many cases of this drug libel against Israel, which now seems commonplace among the Palestinian hierarchy.

Earlier this month, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) heard a report from the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, blaming Israel for the rampant violence against women among the Palestinians. This claim was maintained despite video evidence that Palestinian religious officials advocate wife-beating, and contrary to statistical proof that gender-based violence goes up in areas Israel turns over to be administered by the Palestinian Authority.
